Meilen was born on January 17, 1978 in Tarzana (Los Angeles area) to father Ching and mother Mei, who came to the USA from Taiwan. In Juniors, she upset Martina Hingis to win the 1994 US Open and was named the 1994 TENNIS Magazine Junior Female Player of the Year. She turned pro on October 31, 1994 and, in her first year, reached a ranking of 156! In 1996 she won her first pro title in singles as well as doubles at an ITF tournament in Santa Clara, USA. Her break-through into the top 100 came in February 1997 and in 2001 she won her first WTA singles title in Auckland, New Zealand, which she dedicated to her father, who passed away in 1999. 2001 was also the year where she reached her highest singles ranking - 36 in the world.

In her spare time Meilen enjoys shopping, going to the movies and hanging out with friends. Her name means "beautiful" in Mandarin Chinese, which she speaks fluently, in addition to French and English. We think the name is very appropriate - take a look at these photos taken at Amelia Island, Florida during the Bausch & Lomb Championships in 2003.
