Roger
Federer of Switzerland had another fantastic win on
Court 1 - this time against the Spaniard Albert
Portas - 6-4, 6-1 |
|
 |
 |
| The
next match on Court 1 was as tough as you could imagine. Andrei
Pavel of Romania (seeded 26) beat fourth seed Tommy
Haas of Germany in three grueling sets - 7-6(6),
6-7(5), 7-6(8)
|
 |
 |
| Meanwhile on
Grandstand Court Kim Clijsters
of Belgium had no real trouble against Cara
Black of Zimbabwe, who by the way had beaten
Hantuchova on Saturday. One quick forehand, one quick
backhand...and suddenly the score was 6-4, 6-2 and Clijsters
was in the next round.

 |
| James
Blake of Tampa, Florida, who is playing the best
tennis of his career at the moment, had a great win over Guillermo
Caņas of Argentina - 6-4, 6-3.
After the match Blake went around shaking quite a few
hands, ā la Todd Martin at the US Open! |
|
|
 |
 |
| Tim
Henman of Great Britain was up next against Felix
Mantilla of Spain.

"Our Timmy" (as the Brits call him) won the match
7-5, 6-4, but had to call trainer Bill
Norris several times to get a little neck
massage...
Everyone (except Mantilla) was sort of glad that the match
was over in two sets, because the crowd was looking forward to
the match between Serena Williams
and Marissa Irvin. It is
not often that you get to see a huge star like Serena Williams
on an outside court! |
 |
 |
| And guess who else
you could be getting close to when Serena plays on an outside
court.... |
Big sister Venus and...
|
....big daddy Richard!
|
| Let's see who was
on the practice courts today! |
 |
 |
| Jelena
Dokic (Yugoslavia) seems so happy these days! Maybe
it's because they left Daddy Dokic at home this year? |
Jelena's Mother,
parked in the corner of the court, has to make sure that her
daughter always makes the little "shshsh" sound when
she hits the ball ! |
|
 |
 |
| Young hopeful Ashley
Harkleroad (USA) lost her first round match of the
women's main draw on Thursday, but has another chance in the
Junior event later on this week. |
Another rising star
playing in the junior tournament this week is Maria
Sharapova from Russia, who was seen on the practice
courts today. |
|
Aside from the practice courts, another great place to see
your favorite players up close and personal is the area in
front of the player's lounge near Gate D at the bottom of the
Stadium. There is a little terrace with tables and chairs. The
fans can't get in, but they can watch the players from outside
the fence...just like in the Zoo! But please don't try
to feed them!!! |

Ok, here is one more match for you: |
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
The photos tell the story? Almost...Jonas
Bjorkman of Sweden and doubles specialist Todd
Woodbridge of Australia won the first set fairly
comfortably against the Spanish team Alberto
Martin and Alex Corretja (singles
specialist!). Then our (female) photographer, who absolutely
adores Corretja, showed up and the Spaniards promptly won the
second set. The third set was extremely close, but Bjorkman/Woodbridge
had the lead for a while and it looked like they were going to
win it. But the Spaniards evened the score at six all, at
which stage Woodbridge became a little 'upset' (see above photo with broken racquet).
He used the "F" word ("forehand") at least 10
times....
The tiebreak was very one-sided at first and it looked as
if Bjorkman/Woodbridge were going to claim victory, but to
everyone's surprise Corretja and Martin were able to catch up,
overtake and win this match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
