Winter in South Florida is sometimes a
shock to players arriving from colder climates. Conditions today
were unusually brutal even for seasoned veterans with
temperatures in the high eighties and extremely high humidity
resulting from a stalled cold front just to the North of Delray
Beach. Playing two tough matches within a short period of time
‘earned’ Nicolas Todero of
Argentina a bed in the hospital
rather than the spot in the third round that he had hoped for.
He collapsed with cramps and apparent
dehydration early in the third set of his second round match
against Jose De Armas of
Venezuela. The first set was won by Todero, who also held the lead for most of the second set before
finally losing in a tie-break. Earlier, in his first round
match, the Argentine ousted third seeded John Van Lottum of the
Netherlands and looked likely to earn a place in the main draw. |
