| 317 |
I coach Girls U16 Soccer and we do conditioning runs for our athletes. One of our best conditioned athletes (>10 on Beep Test) has had trouble the last two consecutive runs with Stomach Ache issues. We had a Team Run and she had to drop out after about 16 minutes. Then she ran on her own a few days later with the same issue.
My suspicion is dehydration...... But you are the Doc! Any ideas.

| 276 |
A few weeks ago I noticed some discomfort in my left knee, a few days later I noticed it begin to swell. My doctor told me to just take it easy, that i probably just strain it abit. Now, it seems that my right knee is presenting the same symtoms. Ive always had stong legs, it was never a problem to lift my body weight with one leg, but now if I crouch down I dont dare try and lift my self back up with my legs due to the pain. I basically have to let my weight fall over and then lift my self from a sitting position. Nothing on the internet seems to point me in the right direction, and frankly im a litte scared about this. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevin |

hi doc...Approximately 5 days ago i've a pain in my shoulder and elbow. At the beginning i thougth that it was due to a change of racket what I did (before the pain i was using a head liquidmetal raquet and the pain begin when i buy the gamma ipex 7.0 raquet... i don't if this is helpful to you). Today i use my old raquet and at the beginning there was no pain but at the final of my training it begins... my elbow hurts more than the other days, but the shoulder pain is decreasing... as continuous the pain I want to know that I can make to treat me because at this moment i don't have economic stability to attend to a doctor… By that I'd like to know how much time i've rest to my pain rest if it is not a serious injury(that i don't think so)...And what can i do to treat my injury if i can't go to the doctor???... Finallly I'll be so thankful with you if you could give me a exercises plan to fortify my elbows, shoulders, and wrists and this way i can prevent future injuries because i would not like to quit tennis for an injury... Beforehand i want to thank you for the aid, and sorry for the annoyances...Also Iwant to congratulate you for this great service that you offers doc... Atte...Alvaro Navarro... |

Dear Bonnie, What are recommended ways for competitive athletes in their 40's to improve their recovery time and endurance? Thank you! |
|
| 270 |
Hi - what a great service! What can I do to speed up recovery after exercise (be it tennis or fitness work). Is it just a gradual matter of taking my time and steadily my body will adjust or are there specific things I can do/eat/ drink that will help me feel ready to exercise again sooner. I'm not talking about anything nutty here!! I'd just like to have the best chance of feeling energised 48hours after a session. Phil |

Bonnie
I am a 48 yr old open player. I compete hard with Div. 1 college players. I am in good shape but have suffered a series of arm injuries over the last 4 years. 2 surgeries and recently had 2 more problems which are causing me to not serve and now I have a wrist that is painful. I have had surgery on the wrist once and surgery on the elbow twice.
I am considering switching to a southpaw. Starting over at 48. not what I had in mind but if I can't get my arm better, can't play.

My son has been playing competitive tennis for many years. He is 16 years old. He likes tennis alot. The problems are sometimes he has bad attitude on the court. He gets very angry if he loses. Everytime he gets angry, it affects his game. His work ethics is another problem. He plays but not to the max of his potential. He doesn't work hard as he should has (I mean training). My wife and I alwasys emphasize on the important of sportmanship (#1 on our list), play the right way, having good work ethics, have fun, good behavior on court. We talk to him alot about these issues. He listened tried to correct them but then he did it again. I don't know what to do now. What have we done wrong. Please advise. Do you think he needs to see a sport psycholosist?.
Thank you |

We've all heard of the effect of sports performance anxiety on the body, ie. muscle fatigue, breathing, stomach upset etc.
I believe I experienced an extreme example during a squash tournament that I played in. 1st match of the day, good night's sleep, and 10 minutes into the match I was suffering severe muscle cramps in both calves.
Did not experience this all year previously,( I play about 6 hours a week and 1 1/2 hour matches are not that rare)
My question is: what is the physiology of this phenomenon? My research has yielded very little.Thank-you

Our son is an elite junior tennis player (age 11.5, top ranking in Ontario Canada). We are struggling trying to understand his proper caloric intake per day and to convince him to avoid eating things like pop and pizza at all costs! He is tall, slim and strong and very athletic, trains 2.5 hours per day 4 days a week plus two 1 hour private lessons overlapping with the daily training and often a tourni on the weekend -- any advice |

Hello Bonnie. In conversations with trainers about muscle and superficial injuries, I've been advised to:
1 Apply ice as this limits swelling and aids healing.
2 Apply heat as this increases blood flow and aids healing.
Which is "best' - or should I just leave a minor injury alone and leave my body to us its natural processes of healing???
Thanks. |

i'm looking for a non 'toxic' coloured sports drink. I'm a whole foods person and can't see how drinking something electric blue is healthy. i know you can make you're own, but i'll be on the road and prefer to have a powder. I've seen a few players with a brown looking drink, which for some strange reason looks to me a bit more natural than electric lime juice!!

Hi Bonnie,
I'm 27 and have been playing tennis for a while but not on a regular basis. I have noticed that whenever I start playing after a break, my biceps really hurt especially while hitting a fast serve - do you think its just due to muscle fatigue ? I know about the tennis elbow but dont think thats the issue. Are there any other changes which you might suggest like getting a different kinda racquet - I just play for fun though am pretty good at it !
Thanks,
Kevin |

How long does a Tennis match last?? |
|
| 101 |
Dear Bonnie, I'm 27 and have been playing tennis at a fair recreational level for the most part of my life. I have always dreamt of playing pro tennis (instead of sucking blood in a law firm) and, being no "spring chicken" as you would put it for a 25 year-old, I am realizing it's most probably too late to get on board. However, i still have blazing speed, sharp reflexes and an iron will (5'11 - 165lbs). My question: How long (intensive training) does it take to make a Pro out of the most willing advanced player. (Yes, we are talking about a challenge for the best coaching staff). |

I've seen where one cannot "drink too much Gatorade". I used to drink it all day, at work, at home, etc.
When winter hit last year, I put Gatorade on hold. Several months ago I developed (I believe) cramps in my left upper back, shoulder and neck. They lasted well over a month.
Mysteriously, they ceased, but then started in the same areas but on my right side. They have persisted for several weeks.
My question is: did I become dependent on the Gatorade, and since dropping it completely, cause my muscles to cramp?
Thanks,
Matt |

At what speed does blood flow through the body? |
|
| 76 |
I've been playing tennis for more than 20 years as recreational player. I'm quite heavy (175 cm tall, 95 kg weight). I usually play from the baseline with one-handed slice backhand.
I started to play more recently. I play twice a week during winter now. 2-3 times a week other times of the year. I only play on clay courts. I play with slow to moderate swing and often hit the ball too late too close to the body. I've been training with weights for many years so I have a lot of power on my own.
I've been playing Prince Precision and Graduate headlight midsize raquets with a weight of around 320 grams for over 10 years. I had biceps pain from playing them. Finally last autumn I bought Wilson nCode n3 oversize. My biceps pain went away but I started to have pain in my palm and my wrist everytime I play. This raquet is light, around 260 grams and head heavy.
What would you recommend me to do to get rid of that pain and play without any arm pain?
Any advice would be much appreciated. |

I have a friend who was taking an illegal steroid, he did them about 6 times(2 times a year) After his last cycle ended, a month laterhe had NO sexual drive and could not get a hard or erection. Is this normal? How long does it usually last for? And what can he do to get it back? |

I read this recently:
"For a pro tennis player, or even a junior aspiring to play pro ball, water is one of your biggest friends! Why? I’ll tell you why! Water keeps your blood from getting too thick. Thick blood is bad. Your heart has to pump much harder than normal to get thick blood moving around in your body."
I know that proper hydration is important but is this stuff about thick blood really true? There is so much advice thrown around these days and a lot of it seems contradictory so its sometimes hard to try to figure out who to believe.
Thanks. |

Dear Bonnie, I'm a 25 year old male currently playing on the USTA Pro Circuit. I'm 5'10" 180 lbs, and very muscular. I've been searching for a healthy way to reduce muscle mass without resorting to an unhealthy diet or hurting my performance. I'm very quick around the court, but i often feel as though i'm carrying too much weight. This is especially true during long points, and late in third sets. i follow a diet and fitness program closely, and i only have about 8% body fat. Doing lots of cardio has helped my aerobic fitness but has had little affect on my body composition. Also, every time i lift weights i gain muscle mass very easily. I have very large quad and calf muscles, and the more i train the stronger they get, but i would just like to be 10 lbs lighter. I recall that after Michael Chang beefed his legs up he lost a step or too, and thus lost his a biggest (and only) weapon, his speed. i used to be that fast before a change in body comp in my early 20's, and i would dearly like to get my speed back.
I also sweat perfusley, probably because of all this muscle mass. So i feel fatigue early in matches no matter how fit i think i am. Just as a reference, my body type (and style of play) most closely resemble that of Jim Courier, or even Serena (if i were a girl). Can you help me? thanx in advance, PmBayer8. |

I've been reading about Greg Rusedki. I have also read that Graydon Oliver has been banned from playing for a couple of months as a result of taking an over-the-counter sleep aid.
First of all, how can players be sure that they are not running a risk of testing positive for illegal substances when they take non-prescription remedies that anyone can buy at their local drug store or supermarket. Secondly, is there a list available that players can refer to that identifies everything that you can buy and take legally that could cause a positive reaction?
Finally, how can a sleep aid be regarded as a stimulant - surely it has the oppostie effect???

Recently while I was attending the US Open, I was watching a match between Fabrice Santoro and Julien Benneteau. During the match, bewteen change overs Fabrice seemed a bit fatigued or ill. He sat in his chair with a hot water bag on his head, seemed to be trying to dissolve some sort of pill in a bottle of water and was sipping on a Coke. Why might he have been doing this? What was wrong? |

Dear Bonnie
My son is 11 years old, last year he suffered from tay injurie while doctors treated that hes back started to hurt so he couldnot walk properly ( he walked like a roster )and becouse of that went to hospital for treatment.Since he is prommising young tennis talent 7 doctors examined him properly but nothing showed up so they wrote " sindrom lumbale" which did not say much to us. His sedimentation was very high but did not know what cosed it. He was one month in hospital and one of our Serbians leading doctor looked after him but everything was perfectly all right. As parents we where concerned so we went to another doctor who suspected that our son could be positive on lime desease ( the little bug you can finde in the grass and sheeps and dogs are carring tham ). We went to infectologist and finde out that he is not positive. His sedimentation again was very high 4 times above normal but again thay did not know what cosed it.
After almost a year he is back in tennis. He does not run properly and we have notice that he limps on right foot
( if you dont look you can not notice )He never was a great runner even before he had injury and hes right ankle has tendency to swolen from time to time. All tennis results he acheved was due to hes almost perfect tennis tehnic. With age of 9 he served very fast serves 125km which was unbilivable for hes age.
If it is inportant I will ad this information. My son is 155 cm tall and he has a havy bone structyre he play tennis since he was 6 years old but never unther the preasure
( you must win )
Thank you for heving time to read this letter.

I liked your very informative article on hydration.
I sweat a lot when I play tennis (or do almost anything in the heat). My shirt is pretty wet even after the warm-up.
My problem is that I drink plenty of fluids but it almost invariably gets to a point where it is uncomfortable. If I am playing in the summer I will have drunk a 64 oz (1.9 liter) bottle of Gatorade or a mixture of a sports drink and water by the time I'm halfway though the 2nd set.
By the end of the 2nd set, I feel heavy and bloated - but still thirsty. If I have to play a 3rd set, it gets progressively worse.
I never cramp or experience any effects of dehydration so I suppose that my body is getting enough fluids but I experience such thirst that I have to keep drinking. This lasts for several hours after the match and after I have stopped sweating. It gets increasingly uncomfortable but the thirst is very hard to ignore.
Any ideas what is going on here and if there is something I should be doing/not doing to remain more comfortable without getting dehydrated?
By the way, I'm 50 years old and pretty fit for my age - I can generally outlast players half my age.
Thank you.

OK - here it is! THE most important question there is about sports preparation. It has to be asked somtime so let's get it out now! Is there any evidence that sex the night before a match hurts an athlete's performance??? My college coach had a very strict rule about it. So let's finally have the real FACTS. Thanks. John V. |

Just found your new feature - its just great!
But I am very confused about carbohydrates, fat and sugar. Isnt energy just energy wherever it come from. As long as I eat a balanced diet and get all the vitamins and minerals I need from that, cant I just drink a sugary drink or have a bite of candy bar (and some water) every changover to keep up with the extra energy I am using?
Whats the difference if I get energy from carbohydrates or fat or sugar. Doesnt it all get converted to sugar? So why not just eat or drink some sugary stuff? Isnt that the easiest, quickest and cheapest way of getting some quick energy? And if I keep taking small amounts wont that just keep the bllod sugar up and just keep going?

I was at a College match where a guy went down with leg cramps. The trainer gave him an Alka-seltzer - why? The coach got mad and got the guy up to walk him around and then gave him some chicken broth. Who was right?

I got kinda sick at practice, upset stomach, dizzy. It was about 90 degrees out and before that it had been only in the 70's. My coach gave me a cold coke. After resting a bit, I was OK and continued practicing but I think I read somewhere that soda isn't good for you during exercise. Why did I feel better then?
